Plainsboro is relatively expensive compared to Trenton! The taxes are passed through to rent.

OP, what about across the river in PA? PA is cheaper than NJ.... and much nicer/safer than Trenton.

I didn't think about PA because I'm trying to stay in Jersey. I don't want to pay double taxes.
I know Plainsboro is expensive.

But it seems Trenton is really cheap. A whole 4 bedroom house for 900? I've seen that on Craigslist. Newark doesn't even have prices that low.

Newark is definitely safer than Trenton. Newark is actually pretty safe in some areas, like the Ironbound and the downtown area. Not sure what the typical rent in that area would be though. And I agree with the other people here, you do not want to live there and put a long commute on top of it, though to Trenton it will kind of be reverse. I have a co-worker who lives in Newark and commutes to South Brunswick and many nights she stays at her mother's in Sayreville, since she is too tired to go all the way home, and she has said she could not find anything cheap enough in this area that is a 1/2-decent place.

There are actually two West Trentons. One is part of Trenton, the other is part of Ewing. Ewing particuarly is known for its "spillover" problems from Trenton, as are Hamilton and Lawrenceville, but I think they are probably safer options than Ewing is. Hamilton is quite large so it would depend where. Lawrenceville borders Trenton on Rt 1, but I do not really think it is suffering as much as the others from this effect, just steer clear of the Trenton border. The general rule for these towns is the further you are from the Trenton border, the better.

Plainsboro is expensive (the "Plainsboro" in the ultra-prestigeous West Windsor-Plainsboro), but AFAIK it does still have some dirt cheap rentals there, such as Quail Ridge, Ravens Crest, but I think they are picky about who they lease to. Lots of Princeton studnets stay there, and I have heard from more than one person that they are full of hidden fees and such.

What about some place like Bordentown? It is close and safe and you can probably find something reasonable there.
