If you are already in the store buying bread, it's no big deal to grab the extra loaf. I wouldn't make a special trip and wait in line for an hour to save $1 on a loaf of bread though. Some might, but I wouldn't.

Really? That's kind of weird.

We know this from the WTC Tribute Center. People have gotten on the line on Liberty Street and didn't even realize what they were standing on line for, and someone said they did an actual study on this in New York.

and this is precisely why someone with 3/4 of a tank shouldn't be topping off. i think it's the personal respobility thing for an individual to do to wait at least until they are below the 1/2 marker. that's what i'm doing...though now, this even/odd thing makes that more challenging because now i have to make sure i have enough for the next 2 days instead of a day at a time. so, if i'm a touch over 1/2 by the end of today, i will probably fill up....but if i could go tomorrow, i definitely would not fill up today...i'd leave the space for people who are below.

there's no way to really enforce this, but it's what individuals should be doing to ease the lines, in my opinion.

The even/odd thing is why i had to fill up after being half full this morning. i will not be able to go Wed and would be near fumes by Friday.

Would you really set out on that trip with just 1/2 a tank of gas?

My point is that nobody--from afar--really knows what someone else's needs might be.

you're right...and there's no easy way to enforce it. but if people just used common sense, there would be few, if any, lines.

I'm chuckling because that is just really strange. I just can't imagine getting in a line and not even knowing why. It's one thing to get in a line to get into a theater or concert hall when you're holding a ticket, or to stand in a line to pay for groceries, or to use a public rest room someplace when you need to use a rest room. But to stand in a random line defies all logic to me. To each their own I guess.
