PETA 'not pleased' with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie squashing a spider - National Top News | Examiner.com

While insects are technically animals, it's a stretch to say they have feelings. What's next? Don't swat that green head, he's misunderstood, not a disease spreading vermin. PETA's Ingrid Newkirk seriously needs to get a life, instead of worrying about politicians killing insects. If this is the way PETA is headed, I for one withdraw all support to them and demand all of my charitable donations back (not that I ever gave them any).

While I agree that this whole, "issue", was blown totally out of proportion, you should be aware that insects are animals. Insect | Define Insect at Dictionary.com

However, you should also be aware that spiders are not insects, even though they are both a part of the animal kingdom. Are spiders insects?

Didn't you take a biology course when you were in high school?

I'm confused. Is PETA relevant in some way?

Yes, but only to spiders. Spiders claim that PETA members taste like chicken.

Should I be concerned about PETA next time I spray Ortho around my house to avoid spiders and ants? Would my umbrella policy cover me against any PETA lawsuits for harrassing spiders on my property?

In general I don't care about PETA and I definitely don't care about spiders or their feelings, but I guess overall they were right in that this could have been a teachable moment. No reason to squash the little guy when you could've just let him go. That said, I personally would have squashed it ha.

On a different note, I do hope science progresses to the point someday where we can learn much more about the minds of animals than we do now. I feel like there are tons of secrets locked away in there that could help us in one way or another.

I personally take spiders outside, but I think PETA is making a bit too much of the situation. I also agree with soug, it could have been a teaching moment, but what's done is done. Maybe the governor is afraid of spiders? Many are, and I don't knock them for it. After watching a few too many Discovery programs on spider bites, my husband holds the "kill or be killed" position on spiders. Since he loves me, he calls me to take them outside.

When I was little my Mom bought one of those tiny books they used to sell at the supermarket check out counter, "Signs and Omens" or something. It said it was bad luck to kill a spider in your house, and it stuck for some reason. I usually catch them and take them outside.
