I've tried to read a lot of threads on here but I now feel overwhelmed with areas to target. My wife, and our 3 month old child (and two small dogs) are moving out there in a few weeks. We need to limit our search areas to a few so we can concentrate! Please help!! Here are the details.

We are looking to rent (only be out there 18 -24 months).
Budget - would love to keep it around $2500 but could go as high as $3200 or so for the right place.
Need two beds but three would be great. Two and an office works too!
We are open on apartment or house and see the benefit of both.
We do love living close to some action. Morristown and Madison seem like our types of places but was wondering what other towns in the area would offer a similar vibe.

We like to go for walks/runs and be able to go to places for coffee or lunch. We live in suburbia right now and miss the city living we had prior to our last move. We enjoy going out to non chain type restaurants at night here and there and being able to walk to them would be awesome!

Train station nearby to NYC would be awesome! We have family there so that makes life much easier. If we could walk to it, even better (not sure how parking works for the stations).

We want to stay somewhat close to Parsippany so that the commute is short.

Please chime in with any advice you might have. I really appreciate the help. If you have any specific complexes to look at, or neighborhoods, please let me know. Also any areas to avoid would be a huge help too!

Morristown/Morris Twp is perfect for all of your criteria and easily has the best downtown in the area, imo. Beautiful parks/trails within 1-2 miles jog from city center as well. No need to look any further.

Thanks! It does seem great, just not a ton of inventory out there. Are there any areas in these two towns to avoid?

Check out Chancery Square in Morristown. Awesome building, just went through a big renovation. within your budget. They take pets(although you will get charged many fees including $500/pet up front and $50/month per pet ). it's a full service lux building.

The area around Speedwell/MLK is not the greatest. Anything right by South St is nice and will enable you to walk just about everywhere. Near South and James is great because then you can walk around town and jog to Loantaka Park in about 1 mile (several miles of wooded jogging trails).

I think you're on the right track with Morristown/Madison. But you could also consider Denville which is closer to Parsippany, has the train station, and a reasonably lively downtown (but not as lively as Morristown and a little downscale from Madison). Each of the 3 offer access to good parks etc too.

Is the apartment building you mentioned somewhat quite? Referring to other residents and thickness of walls. Because of the little one, that is something that would be important.
