Trying to find out info about this town for possible relocation. My wife and I are looking for a quiet town amid a rural or semi-rural backdrop, but with a walkable downtown area and amenties within town such as a supermarket, drug store, hair/nails, places to eat, etc.

I like Warren county because real estate prices seem affordable, it is still relatively rural, and is probably the furthest thing culturally from the nj/ny metro area (which we are trying to escape) while still being in northern New Jersey. I would move to PA if we could but my job requires me to live in NJ.

Any info on the town would be greatly appreciated. We plan on taking a ride through town someday soon but I figured id ask here first.

I'm not too familiar with Warren County, and I'm not sure where you work, but you should also check out Hunterdon County and some western parts of Somerset County. Chester and Mendham (Morris County) may also fit your needs quite will. You get a lot of land in these areas and the prices (in some parts) are very good. Also, from what I know, they have charming downtown areas that may appeal to you.

If you could answer these questions over here: Questions For Future and Potential Residents then we on this forum can be a lot more helpful to you. =)

Thanks for the reply.

I work in field service, so I spend most of the day on the road. I don't have an office to commute to, I leave the house each morning and go directly to customer locations. I have alot of flexibility as far as where I can move to, but it has to be somewhere in either north or central NJ.

To answer the questionnaire,

Where are you coming from?
Essex County, NJ

Why are you moving?
To escape nj/ny metro area rat race. Want a more relaxed atmosphere, amid in a rural or semi rural setting.

Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC?
See above

Will you buy or rent?
Buy

What is your budget ?
200k or less

What kind of place are you looking for ?

Small 2 bedroom starter home or 2 bedroom condo

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ?
Wife

Do you need/want good public schools?
Yes, no kids yet but plan on having in the next couple years.

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)

Quiet, friendly, a sense of community, safe.

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short

Quiet/laid back atmosphere, availability of basic retail amenities, walkable downtown area a plus.

To further elaborate,

We only have a budget of around 200k. So Morris county is probably out of the question. Considering Hunterdon county as well. I like Clinton but don't know if there is a "downtown" or not

I personally love Clinton. The little Downtown area (and it really is quite small!) is very nice and walkable. It's located right by the river and is a beautiful area. Here's a site with a list of what's available there: Clinton NJ Shops and Services. However, I'm not sure how many 2 bedroom places are available in your budget.

Thanks again.

I realize options are pretty limited in my price range. That is a big reason why i am leaning towards Warren County and Washington Borough in particular. There seem to be some nice starter homes listed for around 200k in the area.

Don't waste your time if you're looking for a walkable downtown. There's nothing to do/see in Washington.

You shouldn't have an issue buying a place in the borough or some parts of the twp given your budget, just don't expect your neighbors to have teeth in their heads or value education (outside of football, baseball and basketball) too highly.

You might want to consider White Twp. which is next to Washington. I think they use Washington as their mailing address.

You do know living there you now will be considered one of the "Hill people"

What a ridiculously ignorant statement. BTW, you forgot wrestling which is much bigger than baseball in the area.

I don't live in Washington, but I live nearby. Washington and the surrounding areas are very blue collar. People are friendly in a small town way. Although nothing is really "walkable", everything you need is within a reasonable driving distance. You can definitely get something in your price range. Taxes in Warren County are less expensive than Hunterdon County.

Other towns to look at in the area other than Washington Borough:

Mansfield
Washington Twp.
White Twp.
Belvidere
Oxford
Independence Twp.
Liberty Twp.

Thanks for the reply. I have spent some time around the area of Hope Township and I have also been through Belvidere. I like the general vibe of Warren county. Ill try to visit Washington this weekend to get a feel for the area.
