If both parents are working, would you consider walking distance (say half mile) to high school a boon. Would this alleviate the need for parents to chauffer for drop-off and pick-up?

Half Mile, No problem walking it. ... From the Drop off area to far side of some High Schools might be a 1/2 mile.

I think the 2.5 mile "Legal" walking distance a bit far to walk, The average walking pace is 3 miles per hour, walking to/from school almost two hours a day, in the dark most of the time, in area that have little to/no sidewalks, is just silly..

it's illegal to walk to school if it's more than 2.5 miles?

I Googled map my walk to HS. It was .6 miles one way. And I had to walk up a hill coming home. I went to a 1 HS town, still is, and I know friends who had to walk about 1.5 miles to school.

Legal meaning that school bus transportation has to be provided if the distance is more than 2 or 2.5 miles (depending on the district).

BTW, my friends and I walked to school every day. The high school was a mile walk. We all survived.

They're picked up if they live more than a mile away. Mom or dad has to drop off the little ones at school if they live more than a block or two away. Our house--I just checked--was 2.3 miles from the high school. There were buses because half the route was along a county road with no shoulder.

I once told my teenager that I didn't want to see him for the rest of the day. He thought I was throwing him out of the house, silly boy. He filled a backpack and walked five miles through shush and snow to get to a friend's house. Good! I'd spent too much time and energy trying to get him to cut the lawn.

I'd say it's a bonus. I walked about a mile to and from high school, until I got my license (or had a friend who had her license). It was fine.

To put the original distance in perspective, a half mile is about a 10 minute walk at a leisurely pace. Why wouldn't you have your teenager walk to school if it was that close (assuming it's a safe neighborhood and your have a responsible kid?)

Good heavens, do you really think half a mile might require driving? My Bergen Cty town set the bus limit at 2.5 miles when I was in high school. We lived 2 miles away. I had access to a ride in the morning, but I almost always walked it. I am not a morning person, and sitting in the back seat of a crowded car didn't work for me.
