so i'm moving to JC in a couple of weeks... had the utiliities transferred in my name and have to put a deposit over 100.00.. has anyone ever had to do this? lived in NYC almost 15 yrs, CONED never had me do this to turn on service.

Yes. I remember the first time I got service in my name, they required a deposit. You have no history with them, so they don't know if you're going to pay. I guess they're covering themselves in case you're a deadbeat. You'll get it back at the end of a year, I think.
When I got my first apartment--which admittedly was a long time ago--I had to give both PSEG and NJ Bell a deposit in order to initiate service. As was already said, this was because I had no history with those utilities.
Given the percentage of deadbeats out there, I am very surprised that Con Ed doesn't require a deposit.
You did better than me, I had to give a deposit of $270, not getting it back for 12 months. They also disconnected me on moving day and left me with no heating. They're the worst.

nope, no deposit that i can remember from coned in the Bronx or National Grid in Brooklyn last year... yea i'm all over the place lol.. Cali here i come lol
