500k? Dicey proposition at best. Hopefully your handy around the house; a fixer-upper may be in your range. Luckily, public assistance in NJ is decent, especially if you have children. PM me for the locations of soup kitchens in the Bergan county area.
in all seriousness, if you ask about specific areas when you're ready for the move the forum is very helpful. it's just really funny that you asked if $500k is enough. good luck.
The answer is definitely yes. but, if a person is asking if $500k/yr is enough to have those things, I would be led to assume that they may not be that good with money, so maybe the answer is no. while Halffull was a tad mean, he's also not wrong. When i read the OP i immediately thought it was a trolling post.
So did I. The majority of families of four live in NJ on far less than $500K and are quite comfortable. More than comfortable.
Actually, I'm going to retract my wise-@## response above, and give this a bit more thought: I presume what the OP is actually asking is, "What kind of lifestyle can I live in NJ on 500k, with a family of 4?" which is actually a reasonable question. In northern New Jersey (i.e., < 1hr commute from NYC), I have always considered the price of admission to an upper-middle class lifestyle at 300k per year, for a family of 4. So at 500k, you will be well into this zone.
If your expectations are to live at a higher level then this (and if they are, that's nothing to be ashamed of), I can't really help there. I could tell you the difference in living a 150k / year lifestyle vs. a 300k / year lifestyle in Jersey, but have no clue what the delta is between a 500k / year and 1M / year living (except that they're both probably pretty sweet )

Compared to the response you'd get if you posted this in a Boston forum, we are wicked nice.
...and, we drive a heck of a lot better than most of those...M-a-s-s-h-o-l-e-s.
After driving in Massachusetts on many occasions, I believe that MA has the most aggressive, least courteous drivers in The US.
