Kings sales are good, but their regular prices are sky high. Meat often higher than Whole Foods.
i find it crazy that people are doing their primary grocery shopping in regular grocery stores these days. even shoprite, its only worth going for the sales. that's why my primary has become aldi because all their products are well priced, not just the sale items in any given week.
I wonder what will happen to the A&P's in Sussex and Warren counties (Sussex, Vernon, Blairstown, and Belvidere). I think these stores have only lasted because there's little competition. There's a Weis and Shop Rite in Franklin and Newton and many near the Delaware Water Gap just go into PA for grocery shopping.
I sometimes just avoid all these supermarkets and pick up my basic needs at Target. Less crowds and not easier checkout.
I'm tired of going to supermarkets where people either have a huge cart full of stuff and there's not enough open cashiers or people that can't afford groceries decides to load up and can't pay.
Then you got old people that are still using checks instead of credit cards.
I've been shopping at Weis for years (granted I am in PA) and have always found their prices to be reasonable, but then again I do buy a lot of generic brand stuff. Many different options - we are blessed in the U.S. to have choices.

There are many good choices in the US. Just not in NNJ. Weis, Acme (some are good but not here), Giant, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Safeway, Price Chopper.
My brother and SIL live in NE PA, where Weis is the dominant supermarket chain. Obviously they have little choice but to patronize the local Weis market, but about once a week they drive a fair distance to NJ in order to shop at both Shop-Rite and Costco. Since doing this saves them money--even after factoring gas and tolls into the cost structure--that tells you how overpriced Weis markets really are.
We have a weekend house in North-Central PA. I love the Weis here, but maybe I only think they're cheap because I have NYC prices to compare them to. We save a bit on gas with their rewards points, since we're buying groceries for a family of five. We'll be in Berkeley Heights in another month. In town there's a Stop and Shop, and a Kings. Not sure what else is nearby, but doesn't look like the A&P/Pathmark situation will change much for BH.

There is not a Kings in Berkeley Hts, however there is one in next door Gillette (on Valley Rd). The Stop and Shop is ridiculously priced (higher than Kings on many items.) There is a Shop Rite very close to Berkeley Hts in Stirling, it is literally half a mile from the Kings in Gillette, and also on Valley Rd that is where you'll find the best prices. You are also in luck because there is a very good Jewish Deli in Berkeley Hts called Goodman's Deli (I think it is on Springfield Ave) Also there is a very good Italian meat and Deli store called A&S Italian Foods, right by the Shop Rite (in the small strip mall next to the mall with Shop Rite) A & S is the place to go to for made fresh daily in the store mozzarella, and delicious store made sausages. Oh and if you are looking for a good place for authentic Sonoran Mexican food, in Gillette is Casa Maya. Very kitschy decor, but the food is quite good! Every place I mentioned above is within a ~10 min drive from Berkeley Hts.

For some of us, the giant megastores aren't preferable. I like my Acme specifically because it is small. I'm not one who just adores shopping the way some people do. I'm not going to spend two hours going to a grocery store, loading a cart to the brim, then going home and carting bag after bag into house and finding places to put a bunch of crap I don't really need. Life is better simpler. I stop on the way home every few days and get what I need for the next few days. I'm glad there are a few basic smaller stores like Acme around.
