I've walked from the train to/from the falls during the day and it's fine.
Paterson is a blighted, littered, sad place, but I feel perfectly safe walking around during the day. I recommend a stop at the Paterson Museum, too. Lots of stuff to learn about Paterson's proud industrial past.
Don't listen to the people who make Paterson out to be dangerous. If you are taking a bus you could stop at Main and Market walk down Market Street and stop over at one of the Peruvian restaurants to eat then make a right on Market and make a left at McBride Avenue and you should see the falls nearby. If you want good Middle Eastern food you could take the bus to South Paterson. You could take the jitney bus that stops in front of Port Authority in Manhattan. After you are done with the falls, you could go back to Main and Market take the jitney bus to South Paterson, the Middle Eastern enclave and eat good Middle Eastern food, the area is known for it. You could stop at the Main and Eagle Avenue triangle park and walk north to Al Basha, a good Middle Eastern restaurant. You could also go to the Paterson Farmer Market as others here have suggested. It is a 12 minute walk though and another about 12 minutes to get back to the bus stop at Main Street so if you are not driving it is something to consider.
The continual suburban fear mongering that takes place on this site is mind numbing.
I think it's the relationship to other neighboring towns having less crime so it seems like a staggeringly dangerous place. Personally I get more depressed when I go there than scared.

there are many isolated people in the suburbs of NJ.. i went to school in Waldwick, NJ 20 years ago and half the class went to NYC at most twice in their lives.. and considered Manhattan dangerous.

Back in the '50s, my family moved from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Bayonne.
I soon discovered that the vast majority of my classmates had never been to Manhattan, or to any place in NYC--not even to see the famous landmarks.
Back in those days, I don't believe that Manhattan was perceived as being dangerous, but the...provincial...attitudes of the folks in Bayonne apparently prevented most of them from braving the risk of that 20-30 minute trip across the Hudson.

Chances are nothing would happen, but Paterson is one of the most dangerous places in NJ. There are really only a handful of places that are worse (Newark, Irvington, Camden, etc). So if someone is concerned enough to come on here ask about safety, what do you want people to say?
Paterson has a huge amount of drug activity. Tons of dealers around, tons of addicts around. Things do happen there, middle of the day or not.

There are plenty of isolated people in the cities too. I work with a guy who grew up in Newark. He had no idea where Kearny was. Go figure.
