Hi,
I am interested in buying a single family home in Jersey City and turn it into a two family unit. The permit for the property is currently for a single family. What is the procedure to get the permit for a two family unit and what are the time lines for getting the approvals and permits?

Depending on the zone the home is in this could be difficult. Cities zone areas residential, comercial, etc and typically stick to that planning. You should go to the building department and find out how it is zoned. If it is zoned strictly single family you will have to ask for a variance to change it. Honestly it will not be easy to do but you can ask.

I think even R1 zoning in Jersey City allows two-family.

Agreed. I looked up the JC zoning map and there is no single-family-only zone. R1 is one- and two-family.

Never going to happen unless you know someone, and if you're asking here you don't.
