Hi I am thinking about where to live when I will be working at Rutgers New Brunswick. I am considering Rahway, Highland Park, Somerset, North or East Brunswick, Piscataway, Linden, Elizabeth or Union or if you have a better idea in mind.
I would like to live about 10 minutes away from the train in case I don't want to drive. Are there any tolls from these cities mentioned above driving to Rutgers? Which one is the cheapest city? Thank you.
Technically, you can go virtually anywhere in NJ without paying tolls, but the tolls are frequently worthwhile, in the name of convenience.
That being said, Highland Park, Piscataway, Somerset, and "The Brunswicks" are all very close to the New Brunswick campus, and toll roads wouldn't actually lead you from those towns to New Brunswick. As to Union, Rahway, Elizabeth, and Linden, it would probably make more sense to take toll roads in order to commute to New Brunswick, rather than waste time at innumerable traffic lights on Route 1 and other non-toll roads.
The "cheapest" cities would probably be (in order from cheapest to less cheap...) Elizabeth, Linden, Rahway, and Union, but there will always be some variation as a result of the specific neighborhood in each city.
Tolls around here are often an option,,, sometimes it takes longer to get on and off the toll road than to take a tollfree highway or local road. Tolls not optional are crossing bridges and tunnels to NYC, sometimes you can minimize those if desired.

Elizabeth Linden and Rahway have passenger stations on the mainline NE corridor tracks, same as New Brunswick
