Good luck!
check out Hillsdale as well, your budget would get you a decent house in that town. It also has a train station and small downtown in town too. It's close by Ho-Ho-Kus without the huge property tax bill too.

Yes, good suggestion. Hillsdale is one of those nice quieter towns that doesn't make a big splash but is generally very family-friendly and safe.
In my view there are 3 major areas to consider with that budget, 1 of which I haven't seen mentioned previously:
1. Northeastern Bergen County: spanning Ridgewood to the west and Tenafly/Alpine to the east. Many nice towns in the region including Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, etc
2. West of Newark: Summit/Westfield/Maplewood/Chatham/Short Hills/etc.
3. Monmouth County: Rumson / Fair Haven / Little Silver / etc
Generally, for a midtown commute, I suspect #2 would have the shortest train commute, #1 may have the shortest driving commute, particularly Alpine/Tenafly area and #3 has the longest commute but it is a pleasant ferry ride to downtown and probably the best place to be on the weekend, especially in the summer.
As far as weekends, hobbies, etc: #1 is closest to upstate/skiing/etc, #3 is closest to the beach / water activities, and #2 is somewhat conveniently in the middle but not actually close to either. Some decent nearby outdoor activities for kids in the Watchung Reservation, South Mountain Reservation, etc.
I think if you balance commute and the environment you like, that will narrow down whether you want to be in #1, #2, or #3. From there you could probably visit all the towns within that sub-region in a day and decide where you specifically want to be.
If commute was less of a concern you could look further west on each option and consider places like Bernardsville, Bedminster, Franklin Lakes, etc.
I hope these people found a home, they posted almost a year ago.
Also kind of wondering what they do, being mid 30's and buying a 2 million dollar home.
Two incomes and a healthy down payment ...
