Some people have champagne taste on a beer budget. They look at prices of places they want to live and think that’s too expensive for me. More sensible people look for either a way to earn more to make it affordable for them or live in less desirable areas or small/outdated house until they’re able to afford better.
This is not a knock on anyone posting here, just a general statement on people and their entitlements.
Generally agreed, though personally I have reasons to stay in NJ. But let's see...
Around me (Middlesex County), you can get a fairly decent one bedroom for $1300. Might not be the best place, but it won't be falling apart either.
For a studio, there's not many in NJ, but up north there's some. If you look around some, you can find $1000.
So, you need roughly between 40K and 50K income to get your OWN apartment.
And min wage is now essentially 15/hour.
I mean, I don't think that's terrible. A bit steep. But like I said, roommates.
Of course, in Birmingham, Alabama, you can rent a nice 1 bedroom for $720.
It’s not hard to get a job paying $20-25 an hour with just a year or two of customer service or retail experience. I’ve hired many people with minimal experience and their starting pay was $23 an hour. When was the last time, if ever, that anyone could afford to live on their own on minimum wage? In my view, if you don’t want to go to any type of school after high school, you get a minimum wage job while living at home and in a couple of years you can move out on your own. You won’t be living lavish but you can’t expect to if you didn’t put the effort in.
I'm glad you pay your employees well. Working in retail and customer service under the best of circumstances is a nightmare. Not everyone has the opportunity to go to college after high school. Life happens.
My experience is that most people are doing the best they can with what they have to work with.
No normal healthy person is earning minimum wage, its just a tactic used by the left to pull heartstrings to keep the government dole continuing.
When I was 14 I was earning more than minimum wage.
So you’re calling OP a liar? Or are you accusing her of being abnormal and unhealthy? Keep in mind, this thread was started by someone asking for advice, not to debate low income housing and minimum wage jobs.

Nobody has made these claims, except your post now. The OP has been out of the market for some time and apparently is learning their value in the market, and may have gotten a raise last week. This goes along the posts before that minimum wage is way to low, especially since most entry level jobs are now paying at least $20+ now.

You (or someone) said no normal, healthy adult has a minimum wage job. OP has a minimum wage job.
