No way!!! When I lived in Jersey, I was from Jersey NOT NY!!!! I lived in Clifton and I would say it was pretty close to NY, but NJ nonetheless. Never thought of myself as a NYer. I was a Jersey Boy.
I say I am from New York when I speak with people here, when I am introduced. That's because I was born in New York. But I do this because it's a much easier point of reference to those who are not keenly aware of geography, which I assume many to be. I will then say that I am 'actually from New Jersey' but born in New York. At that point, no further mention is made. I don't know if it's because one can not distinguish one political entity from the other, but the point is made that I am from the northeastern US. Here, more are inclined to say what large city they lived near, rather than the state they are from.
Born and raised in New York, but spent more time living in New Jersey, so when people ask about my accent, accent what accent, I always say proudly I come from New Jersey.
i have never said i was a new yorker...i wouldnt want to be called out on something like that--lol
i am proud to say i am from NJ
when people i have met while in Italy have asked, i have said NJ and if they look puzzled, i say i live(ed) 20 minutes from NY...that gave them a better understanding.
