A different Path line goes downtown/Jersey City.

There are a couple of busses that go to the Port Authority, 42nd and 8th.

The commute to 53rd and 3rd would probably take you about an hour from Hoboken. It will take you about 1/2 hour from the UWS. Give or take 10 minutes for both.

Why not look on the east side in Manhattan--you'll get to work much more quickly.

An hour? Ferry will have you there in 1/2 hour.

Maybe if you live right next to the ferry. But if you work in mid town, you will still have to get on a ferry bus to get most places. Also, you can only get to mid town from the 14th st terminal.

There is also the price difference.

$54/month for the path, $250 for the ferry.

Well yes that is true, I live next to the ferry and it takes about 30 minutes (including the bus) to get to midtown and it is more expensive than the path, but taking into account both issues it is still cheaper to live in Hoboken than the UWS.

Things we like are parks, coffee shops, great restaurants, a nice apartment, etc

Where in Hoboken can you find central park/riverside park, the museums, schools, nice apartment buildings, great restaurants, etc? Comparing UWS and Hoboken is absurd. If you can afford both, go with UWS.
