Thanks for all the replies.

I've been to the Whole Foods store at Princeton, but as another poster mentioned before, it's a good 30-35 minutes drive from Edision/Metuchen/Rahway area. What is your opinion about the organic produce at Wegmans (in Woodbridge) ? Is it comparable to that in Whole Foods ?

I have a few general questions related to the whole topic of 'produce':

Buying from a Farmers Market doesn't necessarily mean 'organic'. Is that correct ?
Buying 'organic' stuff from Wegmans or Whole Foods doesn't necessarily mean 'buying local' ?

Buying from farmers' markets don't equal organic or local produce. You have to ask where the produce is from.

If produce isn't labeled "organic," it isn't.

Correct.

Local produce usually has a "Jersey Fresh" sign with it. It's going to be hard to find right now since it's winter. Wegman's is good about getting local produce when they can. However, their organic produce could come from anywhere. Sometimes it is labeled with country of origin.

If you are looking for local/fresh/organic produce, an option might be a co-op type set up. My wife and I used to use Purple Dragon co-op where we would pick up a share every 2 weeks. The organizers brought produce in from all over the east coast but at least it didn't sit for days on a truck or in the back of a store. It was delivered to a central location where we would pick up our share.

All produce now has to be labled with country of orgin. And although not a true farmers market, there is no better place for fresh fruits and vegetables than Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck
