If you feel like making your way to Jones Beach on Long Island (I don't know where you are in North Jersey) but from the Lincoln Tunnel, Jones Beach is about an hour as long as you aim to get to Jones Beach by 10. There's the annual Jones Beach Air Show from 10-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is a great day event. You can bring or buy food and you just need to pay for the parking which is $10 I believe now...along with the tolls and gas to get there coming from NJ.

I also never understood the craze of going somewhere on memorial day weekend... Really what are you going to do on this particular weekend that you cant do in the following 12 weeks. I also live in North Jersey I plan to spend the weekend with the kids possibly going to the movies, park and maybe do a little cook out with the family. Nothing big just family fun and most importantly I wont be in any place stuck in traffic or any where over crowed.

Keansburg! Ideal spot down the Jersey shore for the lil ones, easy day trip if you are willing to sit half of your day in traffic... Id suggest leaving very early in the am.

this is a good idea, thanks!
-What should i expect tehre? Just planes in the air for couple of hours?
-and is this a park where there is a beach and also the air show in the same place?
-what should I bring ? I havent been to a beach with my kids before so I dont know what should i bring except their swimsuit and a beach ball

- Is there a barbeque place? i tried to check the park online however it is giving eror message.

If not this park, I might go to Long Island Live Steamers, Long Island's Best Kept Secret

my kids love trains, so I thought it might be fun. Has anyone been there?
i hope it is worth 1.30 hours drive!

actually i meant Long Islan, NY but this is good info also, thanks alot. Since the kids love train (they have never been on a train) and also my house is very close to Secaucus, it might be a good idea to take the train to the beach so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I usually wait a few weeks for it to settle down. If you go Ocean City there is a Train that runs form New York - Newark - Atlantic City with shuttles to Ocean and I think Wildwood. The Train takes 1.50 hrs and during the summer can be 3 hrs shorter then driving. It runs form Friday to Sunday , but i think this weekend theres an Extension to Monday , if not then you can just take the regular train to Philly and transfer to a Northbound Train. The Train has cafe & outlets?. Very comfortable seats and isn't boring. Rolling through Urban , Suburban , and Rural at an average speed of 90-110mph never gets old. Check to see if its extended to Monday , that was one of the rumors going around. Yes its operated by the Casinos / Tourism board odd eh.

Point Pleasent is almost the same as Wildwood slightly less to do , but still nice. If you don't want to Drive there is a Train called the North Jersey Coast line , you can catch that at Seacacus JCT. During the Memorial Day / Summer months the Train would be the fastest mode of transport compared to driving. Still 30 to an Hour faster , when you factor in all the extra congestion and tolls , kids under 11 ride for free on NJT. The Train will drop you off a block in a half form the nearest beach.

If you change your mind and don't want to go to the Beach you can check out High Point state park , very nice on a Hot day since its so high you break the humidity level as i call it and enter dry heat with a light breeze. Its located of Hwy 23 in Sussex County , near the Borders of NJ - NY - PA.

ACES TRAIN

I just remembered you can take the Train to Long Island , park at Seacacus JCT , take a NJ Transit Train to NY Penn , transfer to a LIRR train and take it too Long Beach or you could go to Montauk or the Rockaways. Kids ride for free if there under 11 , i think thats a Regional standard practice. The LIRR should save you up to 45 to hr then using a car when you factor in the NYC Traffic and congestion. On Saturdays and Sundays and Holidays Parking is cheap at Seacacus JCT compared to the normal weekdays. You can bring bags with you on the train , there are overhead storage racks. Shouldn't be that expensive , no more then 30$ roundtrip. Ive never been there but i heard its ok , but the crowds are a bit big.

I went to the Jones Beach -the air show and liked it alot, thanks very much for recomending it.
But I missed the fun at the main field cuz the people told us that field 2 is the best place to watch the airshow however when we walked on the bardwalk and saw that vendors etc were packing their stuff, I was so disappointed. Because we arrived at around 8 and waited till past 10 am for the show doing nothing because the water was so cold and waves were big. And after 3pm we stayed there just for nothing... If I knew I'd have grabbed the kids and go to field 4-5. But anyways, I learned it the hard way.
we arrived at 8-15 am but only 1/4th of the parking lot (2) was full.
