After getting over a bad cold I'm back. This week in class, a grandmother volunteer said "The sky is blue, the earth is red, and all the directions have a color. This is part of our culture." I was blown away. I've been instructed to make sure I teach proper design for the pots made by my students. Now I'm researching like crazy. I've joined the library in Zuni, but most Zuni books on art can not be checked out. On line I found several used books. The kids are too adorable and I often am hugged by the little ones. I've incorporated some Native American stories and books into my lessons. The many varied art materials available to me inspire the lessons.
The Acoma Pueblo Casino was recommended for Friday night seafood. has anybody tried it? Bacich
Bacich, I'm so glad for the update. I was a little worried about not hearing anything about you for a while.
What a responsibility--teaching Zuni art to Zuni children--and what an opportunity and a privilege. I loved the words of the grandmother volunteer.
I recently read that some Navajos believe that their Creator(s) placed the sun and the moon far away from people on purpose, and that when men landed on the moon it upset the balance and that is why we have been having such huge storms for the last while. Now, that was in a novel (Enemy Way, I believe) so I don't know if any Navajos really believe that, but it's an interesting peek at another world view.

Sorry to hear about your cold. It is getting quite cold at nights. So did you get to enjoy the fair? I had a great time and the food was great. Can you believe a month has gone by in the school year. You might want to ask the Museum about pottery designs. I think they might have some documented. The sky city seafood buffet is good. I think most of the casinos have seafood buffet on friday nights. Route 66 has theirs on thursday nights.
I have been out of pocket for a while and I have missed your posts, and have been unable to comment.
I'm all caught up now reading about your grand adventure! And what an adventure it seems to be! I think they certainly picked the right person when they chose you for this job.
Keep telling us about your experiences as so many of us are very interested in hearing what you can tell us!
P.S. I have eaten at the Acoma Casino in the past, but it was not on a Friday and so I didn't have the seafood buffet. Very good food, though!

Sundance, I'm so glad you bumped up this thread. I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one who was hooked on reading about this adventure. It would make a great book (do they still have books?)! I hope we get a new chapter from bacich soon.
I actually met bacich and her husband in February in Santa Fe, and my husband and I had a wonderful breakfast with them at their hotel. They are great people and we had so much in common and all enjoyed the visit.
I haven't heard anything from her since. I hope she is okay....
Wow, so glad I found this thread about moving to New Mexico.....it is MUCH more positive than several I looked at. Husband and I are planning a move to Alamogordo in the next year. I am hoping to find an arts community there, at least artists to paint with and interact with. It has to be there, but is hiding from me right now. I won't give up.
