Teaching in New Orleans or surrounding areas. (Metairie, Jefferson: sales, rental)

Ok, after tossing around the idea of moving back multiple times over the last few years, we have finally made the decision to take the plunge and move back to New Orleans. We are looking at houses and making preparations to sell our home here.

Here is my question. What is the possibility of my a getting a teaching job? I am only 50 years old and need to work a few more years. My husband is retired and has a good income, but I need to work for insurance. Also, I enjoy teaching and am good at what I do. I am certified to teach multiple grade levels and multiple subjects. I am highly qualified in three subjects. I have been teaching middle school science for the past several years and have had several specialized trainings for science. I have multiple years teaching in an inner city school with diverse issues of both behavior and academics.

My concern is my age. Here in Alabama a blithering idiot would have an easier time finding a teaching job than a middle age person. Wisdom and experience are of little value when it comes to teaching jobs here.

Should I expect the same in Louisiana? Your input is valued and appreciated.

My wife is a Sign Language Interpreter at Edna Karr HS and she says they're specifically seeking a seasoned teacher to fill a current vacancy. Sounds perfect.

I'm also sure there are other opportunities with Orleans Parish School Board and I can tell with certitainty that your age won't be an issue whatsoever.

Thanks Chilly for your response. I am not high school certified, so I probably won't meet the needed criterion for the position you spoke of. I had planned to finish out the school year here while we wait for our house to sell. Most home sales seem to take between 2 and 6 months in North Alabama. I have applied and am waiting for Louisiania to determine if I need to add anything or if my Alabama license will transfer.

Does the Gentilly in your name happen to indicate the part of NOLA where you live? We are looking at a couple of properties off Gentilly. One on Spain and one on Elisian Fields (excuse spelling).

After moving back, we were initially in Gentilly and loved it, but recently moved to the Westbank due to a much better deal on a rental property. I'll be candid in that Gentilly is still in major recovery right now and might not be what you're looking for. I'd recommend Mid City or Uptown/Carrollton .

Getting back to your job pursuit, post-Katrina there are several separate charter school systems to look into as well(i.e. Recovery district, InspireNOLA) along with Orleans Parish School Board. Your certification might not matter at this point as it sounds like they desperately need a teacher for this opening. If I were you I'd call OPSB's office Monday to inquire about it and get the proverbial ball rolling.

Orleans Parish and Recovery are the two school districts. The charters are run by independent companies, and can be in either district.

Yep. The biggest problem I can see her having is the preference for Teach for America people in Orleans. I think they do a great job, but it seems like hiring is a little more prejudiced towards the more experienced older teachers, at least from what I've heard.
