DC metro is a hybrid between a subway and a commuter rail, it wasn't designed for the core of the city, which is why theres about 40 something station in DC itself and 40 something stations in MD and VA, about half and half. DC metro lines are also built more expansive and for commuter type purposes.
For an example, the red line in D.C. is 31.9 miles long, which is just a little longer then the (A) train in NYC which is 31.4 miles long. The red line has 27 stations while the (A) train has 65 station (20th street to Far Rock).
