I'm not sure if this is happening in other boroughs - but there are some new style street signs that are popping up in the Bronx. Instead of the traditional all-caps lettering, the new signs have lower-case lettering on it. (I/E - old: "WESTCHESTER AV" new: "Westchester Av") I've seen these new signs along Westchester Avenue on the 2/5 line and they've showed up just yesterday in my neighborhood.

Anyone else see these new signs around?

I read something about it. Some study determined that all caps is harder to read, so all street signs are to be replaced. What a waste of money!

It's a huge waste of money. And as a graphic designer who deals with typography, trust me: it makes NO difference in readability.

I think it might, sometimes it's hard to read signs in all caps from far away, a lot of the letters look too similar. But that's just my experience.

Plus the font looks better imo, but I agree it's a waste of money.

Why did they change the signs from the old
Black = Brooklyn
Blue= Bronx
White= Queens
Yellow=Manhattan
I don't remember the color for Staten Island. Does anyone remember that color?
The colors helped to tell the borders of Brooklyn and Queens and that section on Manhattan that's on the mainland.

What was the reason for that change?

Idk Staten Islands color but I think one borough shared the same color with another borough so it's probably one of those colors.

it changed because of a federal regulation that was passed making white letters on green background the standard for street name signs.
staten island's was the same as manhattan's.

Staten Island's street signs were yellow at the time.
