Quite possibly, because light rail lines are often cheaper to build than subways. On the other hand, Triboro RX does absolutely nothing to solve the problem of having only one subway line on the East Side.

Fred, weren't there also certain trunk lines that were proposed along with the SAS? Like the extension that was supposed to serve the far eastern Bronx areas? as well as northern Queens.


I've always thought light rail could be well integrated into different neighborhoods. Some places they would work, others they obviously wouldn't. Its nonsense to think that Light rail wouldn't work in high density areas, anyone who has lived in a major city in Europe knows from experience that WITH the proper planning it can work. I think when being planned it should be put into consideration how it can supplement the subway system. Mostly to feed in/out of the lines, in many ways we already have a pulse system but it's unfinished.

one thing I would HATE to see is row developments in highways out here, that would really just defeat the point.

it would be a nice addition to limited public transportation options in Eastern Queens and the parts of Bkyn not served by subway lines.

what's the IND Phase II - extension to the city line? I remember hearing something about that in the 70s. i guess they only got as far as splitting the E/F lines, and that took forever to complete.

The IND Second System was a proposal in the 1920's and the 1930's. It never happened because of the Great Depression, and the rising power of Robert Moses which favored automobiles over mass transit, and gave people jobs by building highways and pools. Robert Moses would have shot down any mass transit planning. Plus Robert Moses also didn't fund mass transit and only funded on road construction.
