I would say as very general , broad rule, Ditmars is somewhat better for families, 30th Ave and South might be better for singles. I think there are more bars/clubs/restaurants for younger single people. the Ditmas area has better schools so I think it attracts more families. But if you are planning to buy and stay a while, that might be something to consider.

It took me a year or so until I felt at home but I love it now also.

That said, the old-timers that live/own property in the area are known for being racist, especially towards blacks, but it's that quiet form of racism--they won't do anything to your person or yell at you, but you might find it difficult to rent an apartment. For example: I was looking to sublet my Astoria apartment a couple of years ago and my landlord actually told me "no black people."
Werd, you should never live or go anywhere you dont belong. The reason my neighborhood can't gentrify is because we do not allow outsiders to live amongst us.

I agree. I lived in Astoria (Broadway stop) with a roommate who was the son of the super. When he decided to move out, I wanted to get a lease with my then boyfriend, who's black. I was told point blank that the building doesn't rent to black people.

I don't think that means that you shouldn't try to move there - that is the only way things will change, but unfortunately I believe it will be harder for you to find a place than if you were white.
