That said, the old-timers that live/own property in the area are known for being racist, especially towards blacks, but it's that quiet form of racism--they won't do anything to your person or yell at you, but you might find it difficult to rent an apartment. I agree. I lived in Astoria (Broadway stop) with a roommate who was the son of the super. When he decided to move out, I wanted to get a lease with my then boyfriend, who's black. I was told point blank that the building doesn't rent to black people.
I don't think that means that you shouldn't try to move there - that is the only way things will change, but unfortunately I believe it will be harder for you to find a place than if you were white.
