Skip the five boroughs entirely, and come out to Port Washington, on Long Island. The Port Washington line is THE best train line on the LIRR -- 34 minutes to the city, no changing of trains -- just a straight run. There are also many great towns on that line that are actually within the city limits (Queens), including Douglaston, Bayside and Little Neck.

Port Washington has plenty of nice rentals available, lots of nice parks, friendly people and a real town spirit. You'd love it here.

The dogs will probably make it very difficult for you to rent a place you like under the conditions you have listed unless you go out to LI. It sounds like you have a nice life where you are. I'd stay there. With dogs and kids I would not come here unless they were paying 300k plus. I would not send my kids to public schools in the city. They are horrible.

Did you ever end up moving there? I'd throw in 50 cents and say NO WAY to moving to NYC for 150k a year... That's nothing there if you plan on savings, college for the kid, etc.

How did it turn out?
