I'll be going to grad school at baruch college in midtown. I'm new to New York an looking to spend in the neighbourhood of 1700$ per month on rent. I'm wondering if anybody has any sugestions of places to live in nyc. I dont mind living further away as long as the commute isn too complicated. I am considering east harlem as this seems to be a good comprimise between cost and proximity. Anybody have any ideas?
It's possible you could find something on the Upper East Side.
In Queens you might try Sunnyside. You would have a 15 min or so commute on the 7 train to Grand Central, then transfer to the 6 train for a few stops. In Sunnyside you would probably get a much bigger place for your budget than in Manhattan, if space is a concern for you.
The Vernon/Jackson area in Long Island City could work if you live in one of the smaller buildings along Vernon instead of the luxury highrises on the waterfront...
Or in one of the highrises if you got a roommate paying the same amount you could possibly get a 2bdrm
If you are considering East Harlem, you should also consider Mott Haven (Southern Bronx) along the 4/5/6 lines....on the express it's 15-20 minutes to 42nd st, and then hop on the 6 a couple stops. Or cruise on the 6 for 30 minutes, and get a seat the whole way down. Just a few extra stops from East Harlem...and much more affordable/more space for the money.
At that rent range you can have a great loft space, and if you want a roommate, or not.
i'm looking at long island city and sunnyside, thanks guys for your advice
