What memories do you have of him from when he played with the Mets in the late 1980s?

A classy guy, a fun player to watch. Happy to see him in the Hall of Fame even though they put him in as an Expo. Accoridng to the NY Times obit:
When Carter was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003, the Hall’s management decided he would go in as an Expo rather than as a Met. Carter said he was happy with that but wondered aloud if he could be shown on the plaque wearing a “split” hat, one side representing the Expos, the other the Mets.

Here's a section from a yahoo article on one of his big moments. To me one of the most amazing parts of the story was that he made it home from second base on a single with those bad knees!
He was especially pumped during the biggest moment of his career.
The '86 Mets were a team with big stars, giant egos and huge expectations. . . .
Despite all their talent, the Mets were down to their last chance in the World Series when Carter stepped up with two outs. No one was on base, and New York was trailing Boston 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6.
Carter said he had just one thought in mind: "I wasn't going to make the last out of the World Series."
True to his word, he delivered a clean single to left field off Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi. Kevin Mitchell followed with a single, and when Ray Knight also singled, Carter scampered home from second base.
As Carter crossed the plate, he clapped his hands, pointed at Wilson on deck and clapped again. Moments later, Bill Buckner's error scored Knight for an amazing 6-5 win. Carter rushed from the dugout to join the celebration at home plate, catcher's gear already on.
Overshadowed by the rally was the fact that Carter had tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Then in Game 7, Carter drove in the tying run in the sixth inning, and the Mets went on to win their most recent championship.

And, not a Mets moment but something that really shows his dedicated spirit. According to the Wikipedia article: "Even as he battled an aggressive form of brain cancer, Carter did not miss Opening Day for the college baseball team he coached." Gary Carter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not really baseball related, but my mom had a bit of a crush on Gary Carter. While she might comment that a particular guy, perhaps an actor, was good-looking, it was very, very, rare that you could tell she was smitten with someone besides my dad.

I wasn't alive to experience the Mets win a championship but, whenever I think of Gary Carter, I will always picture him rounding the bases with his hands up in that moment. Very sad news.
