Hi everyone, can someone tell me about 158th Street Near Edgecombe? Is this a safe area? I'm looking into purchasing an apt in that area. Any feedback will help. Thanks!

Don't you think you should rent there for a year before even considering buying?

I lived one block away at West 159th and St. Nicholas Avenue for about a year. That location on Edgecombe is pretty nice and a lot quieter than St. Nicholas or Amsterdam Avenues. There are some pretty cool historical landmarks in the area like the Morris-Jumel Mansion and Trinity Cemetery. You also have C-Town grocery store on St. Nicholas Avenue right by the West 163rd st "C" train stop which is pretty good, and they have a really nice 24/7 laundromat with televisions on Broadway and I think West 157th Street.

What sucks is that you only have local "C" train access and if your commute to work is long it gets old fast. Also, every time you come home you will have to transfer to the "C" local train unless you want to walk home from West 168th Street. Also, since you're a girl, you should know that on and between St. Nicholas and Amsterdam Avenues is pretty ghetto, a lot of screaming and people hanging out all night. Lastly, there is the constant noise of fire and police vehicles blasting their sirens day and night.

I would strongly recommend checking out the area for yourself during the day and at night and subletting an apartment for a few months before you do something drastic and permanent like buying a place.

If you have any other questions just let me know and I'll try to help, this is all I could think of right now.

One of the calmest little sections of Washington Heights. Its little known and, I think, a bit undervalued as a place to live There are some pretty cool historical landmarks in the area like the Morris-Jumel Mansion and Trinity Cemetery. This is one of the worst grocery stores I've ever been to in all of NYC. It is ghetto to the max, and you will end up doing most of your food shopping elsewhere. Or at least you should. and they have a really nice 24/7 laundromat with televisions on Broadway and I think West 157th Street. But this a bit of a trek from Edgecombe. I'd guess that a condo/coop would have a laundry in the bldng. If not, I'd find somewhere closer to do it.

Also, every time you come home you will have to transfer to the "C" local train unless you want to walk home from West 168th Street. You also have access to the M2 bus which stops right on Edgecombe and runs downtown on the East Side. It also runs limited during rush hours. Also, since you're a girl, you should know that on and between St. Nicholas and Amsterdam Avenues (and all the way over to Broadway) is pretty ghetto, a lot of screaming and people hanging out all night. True So true. Lastly, there is the constant noise of fire and police vehicles blasting their sirens day and night. But it is much quieter where you are. Sirens and the like probably won't be loud enough to bother you, the closer the place is to Edgecombe.

When I'm in that part of the Heights I also notice that a bit further up on Edgecombe is some sort of prison/jail/correctional facility. Obviously we're not talking a supermax here. But I wonder what it is. Anybody know? Or know if it has any impact on the QOL around there?

Minimum security NYS prison. Manhattan has a few of them.

There's also one on 110th Street, and another one near the West Side highway somewhere in the high teens or early 20s.

Thats the vibe I got last time I was on Edgecombe at night, eerily quiet for Harlem....and one block away on Bradhurst it seemed like that's where the party's at lol. I wouldn't reccomend Bradhurst.
