On Scarsdale, there are few apartments in the town, itself. Those adjacent to the station are largely co-ops that are in Eastchester, on Garth Road, and while they have a Scarsdale zip code, the schools are not Scarsdale. An area that you might consider in Westchester that has a fast commute to Grand Central, and is not too arduous to Lower Manhattan would be Larchmont. Scarsdale's school system is widely known as being highly pressured on students, and there are many good school districts in Westchester, just as there are in NJ.
I think those areas with the Scarsdale zip code near the train station may allow entrance into the Scarsdale school system- or maybe there is a cut off point. Also (and I'm just gonna keep pushing Scarsdale) you can probably rent a house for $6K in the area anyway. I did a quick real estate search and did see a number of house rentals show up- and they do seem to be in Scarsdale proper and not in border areas. As for the school system being widely known as highly pressured on students, I'd say the school widely know for having high performing students. What's interesting is that the push to overachieve is from the students themselves (and yeah, probably the parents too). Also, pressure to preform well is not a bad thing, it prepares you for a demanding academic and professional career.
I wouldn't commute from Westchester to downtown, that'll be grinding you down in no time (I live in Westchester). Westchester is great for Midtown and areas around 125th st. If you are working in FD and want to live in the burbs, NJ will be a better bet, you'd want to chose burbs with excellent schools and on a one seat ride to the PATH. The city is great, but the walkability and great parks thing is overplayed. I lived in the city for 15 yrs, and while I did walk plenty, you'll also find yourself on the subway or in a taxi loads of times, its not that walkable unless you're a hermit scampering only around your hood. As to the parks - while aesthetically and historcially they are great, they've also got plenty of littering, dog poop and maintenance problems. Part of the urban experience. There are loads of parks which are great for the kids outside the city also, but their adult owners wanting a bit of Olmstead Vaux prestige will be turning their noses up.
Scarsdale and Bronxville are very protective of their borders, with respect to schools. The zip code does not matter, as if you are outside of the town/village (it's both) of Scarsdale, you cannot use the school system. Bronxville does not even allow other areas within the Town of Eastchester, of which it is a part, into the village school district, yet the Tuckahoe and Eastchester districts are interchangeable in other areas of the town. You can pay tuition to the Scarsdale schools from Garth Road, if your child is accepted, but there is no pass given for anywhere in the P.O. because the high taxes are borne by the village residents, not those who live in an adjacent district. The Scarsdale zip code also covers Edgemont School District, which is also a very good school district, but it's not Scarsdale. Scarsdale is not everyone's cup of tea, and there are families who move from the area because they don't want to deal with the attitudes of some of the people in the town. It's well worth evaluating other districts in Westchester, as well, before one commits to a particular district and town culture, especially when relocating from another area.

Rent a big 3 bedroom apartment in Jersey City/Hoboken a short walk to the PATH Station so husband's carless commute is under a half hour.
You can get very nice for $3K, GRAND for $4K.
No need to worry about schools (they're rotten) for 2 more years for your daughter and in that time you will be able to make a more learned choice. Use the time to search for perfection.
Eventually, with that imperial salary ("upper 6 figures",) you will be able to pick and choose among the finest neighborhoods.
