Hi all. I really like this forum, this is actually my first post but I've been spying on it for years. I've lived in many areas in NYC, first Washington Heights (the nice side, next to A train), then in UWS a block down from central park, and now in Inwood with some roommates (also a very safe and quiet place).
I finally got married after being in a LDR for 7 years () my lovely wife lives overseas but she's coming pretty soon. I'm 26 and she's 24. I need to find a decent place for us to live but I'm going to be the only one working for a while and I can only afford 1250 for rent (plus 250 more for utilities). She has been here many times to visit me so she knows what to expect... but there are a few things we need:
-A safe neighborhood.
-Not a studio(I'm a musician and she likes to make tech gadgets so we both need to be in separate rooms. This is a requirement.).
-An apartment close from the train station.
-NOT Manhattan.
-No NJ.
I travel a lot to LGA and JFK and I am sick of traffic jams that occur in Manhattan. Not to mention the 2 hours I've spent looking for parking. Ugh!. Do you guys think there is something out there for us in either Queens or Brooklyn?. I've been helping friends finding apts (with the help of this website) and last year there was still a good chance to find an apartment within that price range, but now it's looking impossible .
My Wife has always had plenty of space and "freedom" to work on her science and electronics stuff and parks and fresh air so I NEED to minimize her "shock" when she comes here. I also do not have much time. Probably only a month.

Thank you all in advance!
If you need to be near the train, maybe try Kew Gardens or Briarwood. If you are ok with a bus to the train, you have many more neighborhoods you can look at, like Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village.
$1250 for a one bedroom by the train might be tough. I agree on Kew Gardens or Brairwood, but not sure $1250 would be enough. Maybe try Woodhaven or Richmond Hill as well.
I don't know how much 1250 will get you in jackson heights but that should be an option.
These days $1250 to $1400 is a studio price in Jackson Heights. One bedrooms are more like $1400-$1800. But it doesn't hurt to look. Also, across Roosevelt Ave in Elmhurst could be a bit cheaper than Jackson Heights, and the train access tends to be good there as well.

wow. I thought Jackson heights was a bit cheaper than that.
OP how do you like Chinese food? Flushing might work!

Actually, Kew Gardens is one of the areas I've been looking for. From time to time, a listing between 1200-1300 appears in the area, but right now I'm not seeing anything.

I am trying to avoid Richmond Hills. My parents live there and as much as I love them I do not want to be near them. They tend to be too controlling and demanding and I want my wife (and me) to be at peace.

Thanks! I will keep an eye on it. I didn't even think JH was an option for my budget. Is it safe?

Love Chinese!!... but trying to stay on the healthy side now. Fortunately, my wife will probably be without a job for a month or two and she cooks fantastically and loves it . That said, I got no problem with flushing if it's near the 7 train. But even then I am having a hard time finding something close to a train. I thought high season was around the summer .
Maybe if I can AVOID the broker fee, my budget would be 100 more a month. Any way to avoid the fee? Streeteasy only lists pricey rentals and I have learned that Craigslist's "by owner" section is either a scam or a broker trying to avoid the listing fee.

TY all for your responses!
Avoiding the fee is easy (well... straightforward). Just walk around the neighborhood looking for signs and phone numbers. I take pictures of for lease signs I find and then look up the number. You can usually see if it is a broker's number or a landlord from a little Googling.
