I have nothing specific against unions but if UPS is able to quickly train replacements and suffer no impact to their business, it just means the unions are artificially protecting workers with the threat of walkouts. Can you imagine if IT workers were allowed to unionize? Sure, you can outsource and hire cheaper people from India but can a business survive if all of us walked out at once?

IIRC those mainly are FedEx ground employees. IIRC in some areas of the USA FedEx Ground routes are bided out to drivers that are independent contractors.

Isn't that the part of the point of a union?

Shouldn't they also be training them for an evolving world so that they do not become redundant? Rather than just argue with management to keep them onboard even though they no longer have the skillset necessary for the business to develop efficiently?

Workers were treated like crap decades ago, when I worked there for a spell. UPS bragged that all its management started as workers, but it looked like only the biggest a-holes got promoted. One night, a loader got fired for eating an orange from a busted box. Place almost exploded. Somehow, it didn't, but the next night 70,000 packages got mis-sorted! No one else got canned after that.

Some could argue the converse: if all the bosses were fired, the place could run itself!

I know that is the case with the tractor trailer drivers. Some guy in Seattle wanted to hire me for one of his runs. UPS is a much stronger job. Pension. OT after 8. Good hourly wage.

UPS drivers work hard. Never seen one that was overweight. Same with FedEx.

Fired just like that? That sucks. I like all the shipping carriers actually.
