Well cannot speak to the bulk of your post but the UPS drivers we know do well enough form themselves considering the job does not require a college degree. Mind you being out in all kinds of weather five days a week hauling a hundred or so pounds of packages daily isn't everyone's gig. UPS drivers we know own homes in good parts of NYC and NJ also otherwise lead very good lives. I'd take UPS over USPS any day of the week.
As one of my managers told me, it's good money, but it's blood money. On a residental driver release route in Staten Island I used to go out with 210 stops a day. It's not so bad if it's tight. But by 2pm you better have at least a hundred off other wise the rest of the day will drag on. Because you will get tired at some point. They wouldn't always send help.
In the summer to save money they would collapse routes and add more work to keep you at 220. I went out with 250 a few times. Now you have all the regular work, plus one to two more areas that are parts of other routes requiring you to drive more.
I stayed out until almost 10pm one night because I knew my supervisor would get blown up for allowing it to happen. Not because they cared about me, it was an HOS thing.
Don't get me started about Christmas. 350 to 375 with a helper was normal. BTW the helpers they hired were hit or miss. Mostly miss. All the guy has to do is bring the box where I tell him. Most of them couldn't even do that which would only add to my misery.
The fringe benefit of the job was that women liked the uniform. I banged a couple of chicks in the back of my package car in between stops.
Between the abusive management, the mind numbing work I had enough & was burnt out. I took some time off and Went out on my own. That was 11 years ago, it's worked out pretty well.

If you got a package from UPS that smells like bleach, it's most likely your UPS drivers sperm. I won't open a box from any delivery company without gloves and a mask.
Knowing nothing about UPS other than what I saw on King of Queens (IPS), I was amazed that Queens alone had more than 250 drivers. Obviously if they could fire 250, they must have many more.

more reason to have my secretary open my packages.

Our local UPS driver (UES of Manhattan) says he will not enter an apartment or home when a female (resident, daughter, maid, nanny, etc...) requests just to be on the safe side. He does this because yes, many women have a *thing* for those brown UPS uniforms, especially the summer version with shorts. Back in the day there used to be jokes about "milkman's kids", am sure today that applies to UPS as well. *LOL* It doesn't hurt that some of these drivers are big fine AA bucks and or handsome Latino/Hispanic men sent into areas with a high number of females suffering from "jungle fever".
Over the years have seen the UPS drivers in at least some areas Manhattan deal with more and more packages. Much of this is driven by the increase in online shopping. Look at the dollies/back of the truck and you'll see scores of packages from the same several vendors (Amazon, PeaPod, Dell, etc...).

That Maspeth building is pretty big. They cover parts of mid town Manhattan. 250 drivers is roughly 75% of the building compliment. That's why they told the union that they will hire and train new drivers then fire the old ones. I doubt that is going to work out well.
