I am currently moving out of my current residence and will have to enter this shelter in a few days. For those of you who have been there or have second-hand accounts of experiences others have had there, what is it like? Is it dangerous? Will I have to worry about being harmed or robbed? Also, as I am aware that it is a temporary shelter, I'd like to know what permanent shelters its residents are sent to. I'd also like to know how long it usually takes for a client to acquire permanent housing.*
FYI, I am a 25 year old Black male currently collecting unemployment benefits.
Did you go through the Bronx Intake center? How do you know you're going to this one?
The shelter might not be that bad. Many of them aren't like what they were in the old days. They send the "problem" people to "Last Chance" shelters. You should be fine. They know how to separate "certain" groups from one another.

Bellevue is the city-wide in-take center for Men; all men must go through Bellevue when entering the city's system of homeless shelters.

Okay, that's good. This is their way of feeling you out and seeing where to place you. I wish I could give you more info, but my knowledge is limited on the shelter front.
I wish I had more insight as I volunteered for a private shelter in NYC for 15 years. Our shelter took in elderly people from Peter's Place. I know the city run shelters weren't looked upon too favorably by our guests, but they were older, so that may have been a factor in their opinion. Good luck though. I hope things work out for you.
