Maybe it is just me but noticed last night when out for a walk that from about 85th Street and Lexington north to 87th or 88th is always filthy! Newspapers and other debris all over the streets and sidewalks. Rubbish over flowing everywhere, rats coming in and out of the sewer grates/catch basins, sketchy persons always hanging about on corners, etc....

One would think when that new luxury high rise went up on the Southeast corner it would have improved things, but seems not, the place looks so "hoodish". Last night there was a trail of rubbish down 86th Street from Lexington all the way to Third. It looked as if a rubbish truck just poured contents as it went.

Don't remember 86th Street area ever been like this and am going back to when HMV record store and the movie theater were there.

Those persons living in the Lucida must be thinking they were robbed by paying all that money to live on a what seems to be not a very nice corner.

NY just can't have nice things. People pack in here like animals, and act accordingly. These luxury apartments you speak of....think of all the mentally ill, druggies, and homeless that also share the area.

It was probably cleaner when Bloomberg was still mayor.

Well don't know about druggies, but there are plenty of homeless in that area. One or two are always camped out in front of Starbucks on 85th and Lexington. For awhile it was an old and disabled man in a wheelchair with a new looking hospital ID bracelet still on his wrist. There is another who sleeps nightly in a doorway just before Pain de Quotidien on Lexington just before 87th.

One of my least favorite spots on the UES. It's kind of an unexpected seedy pocket right near Park Ave and the gilded Museum Mile. The area changes noticeably once you start walking east on 86th to Lexington.

One reason for all the trash on the sidewalk and streets is due to the 4, 5 and 6 subway station and the thousands of people who use the station; though there's trash cans on the corners so it's not that hard to throw something away rather than littering. Not sure why this particular stretch attracts so many interesting characters either...

Walked up Lexington from 86th to 96th last night with friends and have to say though it looked a bit cleaner still seemed dirty. Rats all over the place coming out of cracks in sidewalks/concrete curbs, newspapers and rubbish etc.... Still further up Lexington one gets into the rich heartland of Carnegie Hill (towards the 92nd St. Y) it gets cleaner however the rats remained. *LOL*

Think 86th Street and Lexington is so filthy and suspect is because it is the dividing line between UES/Carnegie Hill going west towards Park, and Yorkville going east towards Third. Can remember years ago (1980's and 1990's) real estate brokers would say it wasn't *safe* to live above 86th Street especially for young females.

Of course once you hit Park Avenue to Fifth between the doormen and BID type service the area is kept much cleaner.

/\ Rats? What time was this?

It's indeed filthy on Lexington around 86th St but I've never seen rats on the street... maybe they're hidden by crowds of people? In fact I rarely see them even at night when out and about in the city; not even in Chinatown when I sometimes would pass through at night, they're probably there lurking under the trash bags.

BTW, isn't this area near where the crazy screaming/ spitting lady is based? We have a 20 page thread going about sightings of her around the city.

Around 10PM or so.

Have been seeing rats coming out of the catch basins/sewers on the corner of 87th where Starbucks and CVS are located for years now. In fact lately have been seeing them across the street on the other side as well.

We saw a huge rat run from a rubbish can on the corner of Lexington and 91st Street (135 East 91st, the old Sidney Lumet townhouse).

I saw it too. Piles of trash strewn down the south side of 86th. Disgusting site.
