It's kind of ironic that they originally thought it could be a hate crime against Jews, since it's primarily a Jewish neighborhood, but it turns out the suspect is also Jewish.
100 tires and 1 tire/each = $10,000. If some had 2 tires slashed, say maybe $15,000. If the guy has an ok job might be able to pay that in installments. Might be an effective punishment, too.
You can sue... Now when you win, which you will because he's an idiot, you will now have a judgement which you have to collect. Also you could petition the criminal court for restitution which is not a dis-chargeable debt during the criminal phase.
I am not sure of New York law but in most states since this is related to a crime it is not allowed to be dis-chargeable under bankruptcy proceedings.
Good idea. Contact the judge assigned to his case through his or her clerk. Ask for a sentence requiring him to pay back the damage (provide a receipt) and money for your time, if he is found guilty. Too often the justice (injustice) system is not about helping those who were harmed but about furthering the police, judicial, prosecutorial, military and prison industrial complex. If this was the first time this guy did something like this make him pay for all damages and pay for time and suffering of the victims and put a mark on his record so if he does it again he'll be in serious trouble. Sending the guy to jail will probably only prevent victims from getting their damages and I believe in giving people a chance if they haven't done anything like this before. Maybe he was drunk.
You stand a better chance of getting your money if a visit was paid by the local "crew". Otherwise forget it. Just suck it up and pay the cost of damages, then live and learn.
This kid has nothing and is likely never to get anything. You can go through all the cost and hassle of courts and end up with nothing but a lien. Then what? If the guy and or his family is smart it will be arranged so nothing in future will ever be in his name. In twenty or whatever years the lien will expire and you'll still have nothing.
Suppose the kid could hit Powerball or Lotto. That or get a really good job and turn his life around, but then again he could also be struck by lightening. Those are the sort of odds you are looking at my friend.
Sadly parking on a NYC street even in front of your own home is always a throw of the dice. Have seen brand new Mercedes-Benz tore up by passing trucks, persons on bikes, or just someone with a set of keys and too much spare time..
