Before Leoliu post this. I would like to add that the state of Florida has finally surpassed the state of NY. Looks like the good times is rolling dowm south. NY was once number one, than it became number two, than number three and now four. I hope I can be alive when another state surpasses NY. Than again I would not want to move to Florida.

I don't think it's so much the good times are rolling down South. Upstate NY is DEAD economically, and New York has only one major city/metro area, New York City. New York City is doing well, but the rest of the state isn't.

Also I think the weather play a role. While NYC is comparatively mild, who in their right mind would chose living in Buffalo over living in FL? Particularly now that heavy industries have fled, I think more companies would rather have operations in FL than places like Buffalo. What holds the upstate economy together is universities and prisons. There is a business sector (agribusiness, tech sector, some insurance banking, and some military contractors) but it's comparatively small overall.

NYC is a different animal and is the nation's business and media capital.

Florida is poorer than ever and New York seems to be wealthier than ever, because of NYC.

Poverty is exploding in the South.

Give me a wealthier more educated area anyway. After all our growth in FL, we still barely have corporations or white collar jobs. And normal educated people who speak English properly is a rarity. Just annoying as hell NYer/Northern transplants (not the classy NYers, unfortunately), old people and S.A. immigrants.

Also, the only real place to live in New York is NYC and who can afford to pack up and live in NYC when it has the highest prices for real estate in the nation? Even the suburbs of NYC are ridiculously overpriced.

Sometimes I wonder why NYC is even part of NYS. They're so different and should be split in two. One side is dried up rustbelt with declining population and the other is global capital of wealth and corporations that had the biggest numerical population increase of all cities in the U.S. last year. Bizarre.

Honestly if it wasn't for NYC the state would be losing population just like Michigan.

A part of this has to do with the fact that NYC is a multiple state metro and in turn, moving to the suburbs could mean moving to NJ, CT or even PA. You'll notice that states 1-3 don't have any metros that do that at all.

Upstate NY's population loss/gains are all over the place.

Can anyone explain what difference it makes whether NY is 1st or 10th in population ? Why anyone should care ?

Indeed.
Why would anyone complain about a state getting overcrowded at a slightly lower rate than others.
If we fell to 25th, all the better.

Florida is for the retired or wealthy because there are no real jobs in Florida. Also if you're used to the weather and life in NYC....you will be in for a big surprised and shock if you plan on living in most parts of Florida.

Less population = less tax base.
The problems in Detroit were directly related to less taxes available causing government's to default on payments to their employees/pensioners.

"Voting with their feet" is a dangerous proposition for residents who stay around.
