In 36 years of living on the South Shore of SI, I haven't witnessed a single violent street crime. Of course they happen, but statistically, the odds of even encountering one are as close to nil as possible in what amounts to a dense urban area (yes, SI is dense by US standards). I cannot say the same about my 13 years working in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

I still carry a gun everywhere I go though.

It is my inherent right as an American to do so and no one is going to tell me otherwise.

I'm going by the NYPD stats. Just say'n.....

I've never witnessed a "stick up" or street crime in SI either and I live on the North Shore. Thing is, I know it happens.

OP did not mention where they work because that would be a huge consideration when choosing the area in SI. I have friends who live in Great Kills, Annadale and Oakwood, they work in Midtown Manhattan and their commute is 1hour 45 minutes which exceeds my commute from Nassau county suburb by 15 minutes! The South Beach and Midland Beach have experienced tons of new construction and growth in the early 2000's only to be slammed by Sandy and for 2 years, no one would touch the houses there, slowly, it's coming back up because in terms of the commute to NYC, these areas are great as they are right next to the bridge. Also, with SI, similarly to how it is with entire NYC, most of the elementary schools are great, however, middle and high schools leave a lot to be desired.

What kind of gun do you carry? I currently carry a Glock 9mm but might switch to a compact .45.

1:45 commute is rough. I'm downtown and my trip from Oakwood to downtown is 0:45-1 hour depending on traffic, including my walk time.
