Hi. I was looking up crime statistics for each borough circa 1990 and i realized the 110th precint in Queens (which covers corona and elmhurst) recorded a whopping 36 murders in that one year alone!!!!There was also like 9,000 total crimes...which was even higher than the amount of total crimes in 75th/77th precint in brooklyn! Can an elmhurst/corona resident that was around in the 80s/90s clarify how bad it truly was? Seems like it was a warzone based off the stats alone! What were the gangs mostly made of? Latin gangs?Asian gangs? Colombian cartels? I know the area has changed for the better, but something bad must of been happening in those days! Heck, even in 2014 that area has recorded 8 murders which is pretty high for an nyc neighborhood these days!
Lefrak is probably the worst out of all the communities around Queens Blvd. But still seems calm and cleaner in comparison to South Jamaica, East New York, ect.
I think Lefrak started getting bad around that time but I'm pretty sure the majority of the crimes and murders you saw there either took place in Corona or parts of Elmhurst near Corona. There's still some spots in elmhurst that would surprise you as to how hood they feel. It's not necessarily that bad stuff happens around there but moreso the crowd. Obviously, a lot of it has changed and it's alot more working class asian now than it used to be, but there are still some parts that I would imagine have the same old characters you had back then, just older and wiser.

What part of Elmhurst is hood?
Lefrak City is Corona. Lefrak City starting going downhill due to lawsuits in the 70s. Lefrak was mostly white and when Blacks and Hispanics moved in they took them through vigorous background checks. And one had to make a certain amount of money from one's job to get an apartment in Lefrak. A civil rights lawsuit said this had disparate impact on minorities. So they let in large numbers of non working people on Section 8 and Lefrak eventually became the defacto HOUSING projects!
I heard elmhurst was a black area back then......lots of blacks in corona too from what i hear.....Kool G Rap, a well known gangster rapper, grew up in the area in the 70s and 80s.....

People are mixing up East Elmhurst and Elmhurst. Two separate neighborhoods. East Elmhurst was a black neighborhood since the 50s. It is now Hispanic since many of the black homeowners moved out of the city or have passed away. That has been a trend since the 80s.
