You can download the TKTS app to see what's available when the booths are open. To buy tickets, though, you have to physically go to the booth.
What show are you interested in?
The Downtown TKTS booth also sells matinee tickets for the next day (as well as the same day tickets) whereas the Midtown booth sells only tickets for the same day. I think there is a third booth in Brooklyn but I don't know their policy.
If you are coming in to see one show, my advice is to splurge. Trying to save a buck might backfire if your seats are bad and you don't enjoy the show.
I saw 60 shows last year, so I'm always looking for a deal.
It depends on the theater how bad the rear mezzanine will be. There's a website called A View From My Seat that has photos taken by audience members. To try it out, type in the name of a theater. If you type in Richard Rodgers Theater you'll see lots of photos, to give you an example, because Hamilton is very popular. Which is the understatement of the year pretty much.
As Kefir King said, above, For ticket discounts you could go to the half-price ticket booth, called TKTS, in Times Square and two other locations. That is for same-day sales only, and next-day matinee sales at the Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn locations.

TodayTix is an app for your smart phone that often has deals. You can purchase right in the app. There are fees, of course. But it is reliable and trustworthy.
Theatermania.com, as previously mentioned, has lots of discount codes. Gold Star is good too. Avoid Broadway.com because the prices are inflated.

I suddenly realized that this is one of those perfect time to go to a play - I'm sure others of you have realized that around certain holidays or certain events, tickets are easier. In the past, I used to compare the extensive blurbs in New Yorker and New York magazine but, hard to believe, they've both mostly eliminated that.
With movies, there's the Rotten Tomatoes site. But is there any place that you like, either print or online, that has quick opinion run-downs for plays?

Matilda: I know it's a children's story but personally I think it's sadistic
She Loves Me I hear is charming
Hughie: not of interest to kids that age
Blackbird: A child predator is confronted by his victim, years after the crime. Harrowing and raw. Sexually graphic. I would cross off this one.
