Basically the "hand" versions are dying out. Last Sunday's NYT had an interesting article on one such place in Brooklyn.

Between ever increasing rents and decreasing demand for their services places are simply going away. Those that remain in business are adapting towards more "mass market" sort of work. That is work being sent out to wholesale laundries with them doing perhaps some ironing when it comes back. Large volume is in drop off "wash and fold".
