Socialism doesn't work. We've seen that over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. And yet people never learn and are tempted to go down that path again and again, repeating the same mistakes.

Ok we can go on forever on this and not get anywhere. I am just saying you pay your fair share of taxes, if everyone else did, there would still be enough... yet I don't see people getting mad when those same tax dollars are being spent on meaningless wars. In the end they will spend those tax dollars somewhere else so why not on our children's education.

Did you not read all the comments here? We already are spending a lot of money on our children's education. There's already a whole host of programs that help needy and deserving students from grants and scholarships.

What you don't seem to get is that just because an idea sounds good on paper, i.e. helping people get free educations, what Cuomo is proposing is not a good way of going about it.

What it will do is waterdown the education for everybody else. People that normally wouldn't be or shouldn't be going to college will be going just because it is free. That would just be wasting money that could otherwise be spent on the good students that could get more out of a college education.

What part of that do you not understand?

Maybe you are not understanding you claim there are already programs out there, but what I am saying is there are not enough programs out there. Currently there are smart good students working part time jobs so that they can go to school while barely trying to make ends meet. I know this because I was one of them and knew many more in the same situation.

Still don't get this waterdown education model you keep referring too even for financial aid you need to keep a certain gpa or you go in academic probation and eventually get kicked out. So how would anyone just be able to attend. If they continue on with this model in which one needs to maintain good grades, since this is what they do now, why is this bad again?

Exactly. And what it would also do is DAMAGE the reputations of both CUNY and SUNY, which hurts working class people who are sending their kids to the most affordable college. Free college likely means many more students enrolling and lower graduation rates. If Cuomo was proposing the proper admission standards to go along with this, that would be wonderful, but I do not think CUNY and SUNY can get away with taking in only people with top SAT scores and/or high GPAS. These are two public university systems that have to serve the average New Yorker who wants to go to college, so they cannot be selective.

Cuomo wants to RUN for President in 2020, and this is just padding his resume so he can say he did something "liberal" in New York. He clearly does not care about the long term effects this would have on state and city budgets, the job market, or the reputations of SUNY and CUNY.

I'm all for there being help for top students (honors programs), but too broadly make college free for everyone is an utter disaster, and needlessly takes people out of the job market, while raising taxes.

What is WRONG with them working part time jobs?

Even when students get deals where they have free tuition, they have other costs such as room and board, transportation, clothes, entertainment, cellphone, etc. It's no one's responsibility to provide a student with EVERYTHING so they never have to work as a student! I have worked as both an undergraduate and a graduate student.

Good grief some people think they are ENTITLED to everything for FREE. Thank GOD Trump won the election after all, and if I have to keep hearing this nonsense I will turn into a Republican!

I thought you were already a republican with all that praise for Trump.(but yet you don't complaint about his tax loop holes, but yes his smarter than us)

NO one said EVERYTHING has to be free or everyone is ENTITLED.
Doubt anyone can just get a free pass to go to college while everyone is else is paying, since currently even for financial aid there are thresholds. So why not have the more intelligent students that would otherwise not have these opportunities. Yes they exist now but they are minimal. Doubt those tax dollars are going back into your pockets so stop getting mad if its for the greater good, but right Trump will fix all this.
