This is something that's always fascinated me.

I'm a vegetarian but not for any real moral reasons but meat packing/slaughterhouses always got me interested (as morbid as that sounds)

I know the Meat Packing District is now all flats and outlets - it's very nice (but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea) but when did the meat packing units actually cease trading and start getting gutted out? and are these small halal neighbourhood abattoirs that are dotted about on busy streets throughout New York an alternative to the old district or have these always been there on the streets too? I suppose they serve a purpose as there are people who like to meet their meat so to speak and enjoy picking what animal they will eat - each to their own really.
