It's actually pretty shocking how far they've expanded in such a short period of time. I went onto their website to look at their full list of locations and couldn't believe it. They're in like half the county and all over the world now. Somebody got really rich really fast off that one.

Shake Shack is known for its burgers. The business started off as a hot dog cart, but when it built and moved into the kiosk (and started calling itself Shake Shack), it began selling burgers and frozen custard in addition to the hot dogs. The burgers were the main draw and were what drove the hype and long lines. At that time, there weren't really other fast-food style burgers of that quality, cooked to order, using Pat Lafrieda meat, etc.

I still like Shake Shack but I think it was better before it expanded. As a large chain, a lot of the processes are more streamlined. Burgers are always cooked to medium now whereas in the past you could get them cooked rare or medium rare. They used to change the frozen custard flavors more frequently. During the holidays like Memorial Day or Labor Day, they would offer specials like corn dogs. They used to have better customer service but now they have a lot of apathetic employees. I still like them but it's just a good-quality chain now instead of that shack with good burgers and crazy long lines in Madison Square Park.

The growth took off in 2010 when they opened in Miami. Really has exploded in the last couple years.

The quality of burgers in NYC has gone way downhill over the years (mainly referring to diners).

I have never eaten outdoors at SS (or ANYWHERE) and never would. Too cold in Winter, too hot in Summer, smell of bus exhaust, street noise. We usually go somewhat off-hours rather than at prime dining time so an indoor table is usually gotten before the buzzer announces our food pickup.
Last time we shared with a delightful couple and had a great time with them.

It's not rocket science to make a burger. If I want a burger, there is no reason to specifically travel to a Shake Shack. If I happen to be close to one I might go, but beyond that it's whatever.

If you want a reasonably priced burger cooked over FIRE, there are few alternatives to Shake Shack.
