So let me get this straight, NYC taxpayers are not only responsible for paying $thousands per month to house any broke people not actually from NYC, but now we also have the liability for bad landlords? I mean come on WTF!!!

This is pure insanity, we are not a socialist country and with good reason. It is absolutely inevitable on this trajectory that the city will eventually go bankrupt and will hollow out just like it did in the 70's. How anyone does not see right through DeBlasio is beyond me, this man is going to destroy the city again
People moved to NYC to get welfare under Giuliani and Bloomberg. At this point this matter is for the courts to decide and there is nothing the city can do.
There is a welfare program where anyone with Aids can get free housing, even if they just moved to NYC that day. Both Giuliani and Bloomberg tried to end this program called HASA. Advocates lawyered up, sued the city and the city lost. Poor homeless people with AIDS mov yo NY for the generous Medicaid and housing benefits. But as I noted, the courts have not let the city discontinue this program. NY has to House and feed anyone with Aids and pay for their medical care.

I had a family member who worked for this program. One day Aids victim had the city pay for her food to be delivered because she was too fat to walk down the stairs.

It would take an act of Congress to change or eliminate this program. They’d have to reduce or eliminate the federal portion of the program.

I hope some of you guys never ever get into a rut, that you can't get out of. Karma sucks. This is the greatest city in the world. Your tax dollars pay for so much crap, that you let sly, but 2 little girls burned purple, have to suffer, all because of exposed heat risers?

For those that don't realize , apartment buildings have the heat on full blast ,to avoid tickets. But at the same time, charge for window guards and smoke detectors. Don't think the city was paying cheap rent for them either. Market rate rent was likely paid a year in advance, and their buildings super would not thing of such a hazard as dangerous?

So no, f them freeloaders? What about people in a housing lottery? Freeloaders? Getting them low cost apartments, even if their pay scale went up? How about the disabled, they should just deal with the cards dealt and not get assistance? How about residents of the city ,living in rent controlled apartments, getting free food from the church, all while making over $100k a year. Do they get shamed?

And the rest of the city, getting ebt cards, while their husbands drive a cab/Uber , not paying taxes on income, but manage to be home owners? There are too many real moochers out there, but this burned baby business, freeloaders from Maine, screw them, they should not be suing the hand that feeds them, right.

You act like they are suing you!

Yep, that's the way it goes. It will be settled of court for the maximum amount of the Landlords liability insurance, with the city making up the difference if there is any and NOT admitting responsibility.

Yes and anyone waiting for reform can dream on, since Republican presidents and Congress just talk about welfare reform but do nothing. So guys, pay them taxes sonny or face the wrath of the IRS.

They ARE suing us, we the taxpayers. By and large People completely fail to realize this, they think government is a giant infinite source of free money - WRONG. That money comes from YOU

If the landlord was negligent, he will be found guilty. The neglect has nothing to do with the city, in fact the city has gone above and beyond what they should do in paying for a free apartment for these outsiders getting a free ride on NYC's dime

People need to take responsibilities for their own actions. A homeless couple has no business having kids until they fix their situation. At the end of the day, the building is at fault for allowing anyone to live in that apartment. The building's insurance should cover the lawsuit.

I agree. Nothing is going to change regardless of political party in office.

Anyone who knows anything about laws of NYC and NYS also knows whenever possible you name the city in personal injury lawsuits.

One, NYC has deep and potentially unlimited pockets. Their power to levy taxes means in theory funds could be raised to pay any court award.

Two, due to the archaic and byzantine laws of New York State the city can be made to pay 100% of any court award for personal injury even if found only a percentage of blame was affixed. If the other party or parties cannot or do not pay their portion of award, the city can be forced to step in and pay the entire amount.

You now understand why NYC's law department under Bloomberg and continuing under BdeB has been very proactive in settling cases instead of going to trial. This also carries risks as any attorney (or their clients) will simply sue the city because they assume will "get something" by means of settlement.

Pete Ambrose and his wife are both drug addicts. Pete has been arrested by the nycpd for drugs several times before.
The Ambrose's will take their civil award and spend it on more drugs.
The defense who are also the tax payers of NYC and NYS should demand that this case be dismissed by the court because of parental negligence . If Daniella Ambrose did not leave her apartment at 10:12 am for her drug fix and return around 11:42 am, like she did Ms Ambrose would have been able to save her children.
And why was the drugged out Mr. Ambrose still sleeping at 12 noon? Was he strung out from his fix...LOL
