this has helped my LL because when i would complain it was cold, and (everyone feels cold differently), so when it was 67 and i was cold, he would raise it and I was correct, but if it was 72 and i say im cold, then I need to wear a heavier shirt, and thats fair...

so being my apartment is on the top floor and I am a co-op owner the LL used my apartment as a guide for the heat. If I didnt call him, he knew we are good as far as heating, and if any tenant called the office, he would say well *insert my name* didnt call, so it cant be that cold. I am guessing and tenant that heard that, wasnt to happy, though...

anyway, I am happy to report in this cold weather all my rooms are a toasty 77 degrees, living room hit 82, as it is sunny, thank you very much. Now my wash is done, and Im about to hang it on my rack and put in front of the radiator, should be dry in a few hours.

I do feel sorry for anyone that is experienceing heat loss. But the thermometers in my apartment have really helped our situation here.
We have one installed in our apts on the wall shared with another apt by a closet. Which is why I have my own that I place by the door and window. That way I can show how it varies through out the apt. I mean we are talking about a 20 degree difference at certain times of the day. I'm glad I complained though cause it did make them raise the temp of the heat which makes the draft of the windows not so bad.

I can deal with how chilly it gets by the windows if the heat is set at a higher temp. Earlier this season they had the heat much higher so it wasn't an issue but then something happened in the building and thye lowered it 10 or so degrees. Too be honest what it was set on earlier this year was actually a bit too high but I will take too high any day over needing to bundle up and still feeling cold.

I agree, because before it was this cold, the apartment, even I know it was very warm. But living in the same building since 1989, I say nothing because I knew it would get cold and we would need it.

There were many years where the heat would go on in october and then we'ed complain it was to hot, it would get lowered,, then february would come and we'd complain again. hey, up or down, what do you want, and the LL was right.

I just couldnt understand that when we finally got it right, why cant it be set the same exact way the following year???till this day, it always take a while get it right. I think now, no one is saying anything cause it it so GD cold, and its better to open a window, then put the oven on.

So when the chick next door told me her apt is very hot, i said keep your mouth shut, and be happy, at least you can open a window. and were friends...

Cold also penetrates thru glass, even the double pane windows, if you stand near my windows you can feel cold. I did get a new window in my kitchen a month ago, as the old vinyl window was terribly drafty and broken. The new bronze window is aluminum and I can really feel a difference in my kitchens heat. My other windows are all ok. as they didnt need replacing.

You are smart. Best not to complain. Too much heat is better than too little heat is my motto.
Also, they make bronze windows now? You're right about the double pane windows doing crap.
I shudder to think what single pane windows do? Best not to contemplate.
Overly heated NYC apt's are a cherished tradition. And we are known for that. Doesn't bother me.
I like things toasty. And I prefer walking around with a t-shirt and shorts inside my apt.

If you are a co-op owner you don't HAVE a landlord. You are still caught in a renter mentality.

You can call him the major shareholder, the co-op sponsor, or the son of a *****.

The owner of the building is the corporation of which you are a shareholder. He sold the building to the corporation in return for a large block of stock and a pile of money. (You bought a little block.)

You might find this interesting:

Quote:
''Most co-op offering plans provide that the sponsor may not control the board for more than five years after the closing of the conversion or after 50 percent of the shares have been sold, whichever comes first,'' said Stuart M. Saft, a Manhattan co-op lawyer who is chairman of the Council of New York Cooperatives and Condominiums.

In your building how many co-operator owned apartments are there; how many rental apartments?

I know all the details about the sponsors, but some people don't, so when on these forums, its easier to say LL.
that way everyone understands, and its not that big of a deal.

Where the thermostat is place in the middle of the room by the closet it reads barely above 68. Where I placed my own thermostat by the windows it reads 60. Will they have to turn up the heat based on the temperature by the window or is the landlord responsible for insulting the windows so its not cold by them?
Have you tried putting some pants on? Just going by what you said in the other thread.

You can also cover the windows with plastic. 3M makes a kit that's cheap and easy to install.
