So I know Marble Hill is the only part of Manhattan on mainland but no one I asked seems to know what its boundaries are, nor am I finding any clean definition on the internet. Can someone elaborate?
I read somewhere that of Marble Hill Projects’ 11 buildings, 4 are in the Bronx and 7 in Manhattan. My assumption is that the buildings west of Broadway count as the Bronx, and the 7 to the east of Broadway (directly facing Target) are Manhattan? Is that Target also part of Manhattan? Where does Kingsbridge start?
Marble Hill is a piece of land that used to be part of Manhattan. Marble Hill is the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is the only Manhattan neighborhood on the mainland of North America. Marble Hill was occupied as a Dutch colonial settlement in 1646, and gained its current name in 1891 because of marble deposits underneath the neighborhood. Until the 1890s, Marble Hill was part of Manhattan.
In the 1890s, the Army Corps of Engineers decided to build a canal for a shipping route between the Hudson and Harlem Rivers. The canal was opened in 1895, making Marble Hill an island between Manhattan and the Bronx.
In January of 1914, the NY State legislature created Bronx County but Marble Hill remained part of New York County. Later in 1914, the old river (the part north of Marble Hill) was filled in with landfill, thereby connecting Marble Hill with the Bronx and the mainland. This created all sorts of confusion about whether Marble Hill is part of the Bronx or still part of Manhattan, confusion that persists to this day.
Not sure about where the actual dividing line between Marble Hill now lies. I had always thought it was 231st Street, but some documents say it is 230th Street.
If one looks at Google maps, Marble Hill goes just past 228th, with the boundary being 230th street. The problem is not all of West 230th street is in Marble Hill, but it's definitely the border.
So everything east of Broadway is the Bronx? The Target, the projects, etc?
The Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan extends from Broadway west to Riverdale, and north thru 228-230th street?
Yes. West 230th street could be used the boundary because that's the closest street north, but technically West 230th street is really Kingsbridge. The problem is Marble Hill's boundaries go past 228th street but not all the way to West 230th street. You see Kingsbridge has more of a street grid, where as Marble Hill does not, which complicates where it ends at.
Regarding Target, no. Kingsbridge does not run that far south. Target is mislabled as being in Riverdale to attract residents to the store from that neighborhood, but the store is in Marble Hill proper. I'm not quite sure however if it's considered to be in the Bronx part of Marble Hill. It's so close geographically at that point that I think it's just considered the Bronx. If you crossed the street from Target and walked a few steps, you'd definitely be in the Bronx if there were any question.
Google maps give you a good idea of where the boundaries are. They are not so cut in dry since as I said, there isn't a true street grid in Marble Hill.
To be frank, Kingsbridge is probably the only neighborhood in that immediate area with a street grid. Marble Hill, Riverdale, Kingsbridge Heights... None of those areas have a street grid. Part of it is due to the topography of the area. For example the hills in Kingsbridge Heights cut up the area along with the reservoir. Riverdale was actually designed based off the rocky, hilly terrain, so the streets follow that and there is no street grid there as a result.
