It could be either, but if you're concerned let management know and/or call the police to check out the apartment. A week is a long time for a corpse to fester in an apartment. If they are dead, you'd smell them by now. Hope this ends well!

An old couple lives there. I’m thinking they are dead.
We had this exact scenario about a month ago. Nosy neighbor decided she needed to make a whole scene about it call the super in the hallway EARLY in the morning on a weekend and tell him how there's a large package propped on the guy's door blah blah blah (get away from my door!! ), and the guy's lights are on.
Turns out the guy had went away for a while.
If you must do it, just don't make a big scene like some people do.
