I moved to Tarrytown a year ago from Chicago. I miss the vibrant urban culture of Chicago.. Tarrytown is much sleepier in comparison. Unfortunately, we can't afford to live in Manhattan since we have a baby.
So I am trying to committ to exploring NYC despite being a bit far away. I am looking for unique things to do in the city that are not tourist traps.. Specifically looking for lesser known museums and ethnic neighborhoods. I am not into Broadway. I have seen some comedy shoes at Upright Citizen brigade which were good. Any other lesser known comedy/theater/music places to check out?
There are a good deal of consulates and diplomatic missions and ___ societies like Asia Society and Japan Society that hold events, talks, dinners, movie screenings, exhibits, etc. that are usually not too far away from Grand Central. Those might be of interest. If there's a specific country or culture you're into, then you might look into that.
If you're driving, try taking a trip to downtown Flushing which is pretty fascinating and there are enough parking complexes to make it easy enough to park before walking around. Lots of interesting restaurants and shops.
I also suggest exploring the Hudson Valley, since you're there already. There are a lot of beautiful old mansions along the river that have been turned into museums, essentially, and if you're into history, they're very very cool. Lyndhurst is right in Tarrytown.
Try looking an hour or 2 east and west from you.
Attended Concerts in PA and Jersey not to far from you.
Give that a try if you aren't happy with anything in the city.
