What are some off the beaten path things to do in Michigan? You know, the things that aren't talked about?

So basically, what I'm looking for is:

1. Something other than hanging out at a lake for boating, fishing, swimming, etc.
2. Something that isn't an attraction that everybody knows about. We all love Mackinac Island, Greenfield Village, and places like that, but unless they're deep into the UP, I've probably been there before.
3. Natural scenery is nice, but cookie-cutter picturesque is not. I'm not really interested in buying trinkets in a typical tourist town, unless they've got some local flavor to them.
4. Speaking of local flavor, it's awesome. Whether it's a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, a microbrew, or anything else, individuality is welcome.
5. I like moving around, so hiking trails would be a plus.

So... what kind of things are there like this in Michigan? I'm trying to find stuff to do other than relax at the lake this summer.

Grand Marais to Munising. Lots of hiking, hidden sunken shipwrecks, microbrew in GM.... The list goes on.

Detroit's Eastern market. Awesome.
Flint's Farmer's market - also awesome, albeit on a smaller scale.
You can make a day trip out of either. Especially if you can haul a bike or canoe along.

We love to geocache. It definitely gets us off the beaten path, and we've seen sights we wouldn't have otherwise seen. The best part is that it can be done wherever you're at.

Second the geocache. Pick an out of the way area like the Nordhouse Dunes, Seney stretch, The Manistee - Huron - or Hiawatha National forests (haven't done a lot in the Ottawa one so that is an unknown to me). It will really take you off the beaten path and be fun in the process.

Actually stop and stay for at least one day in Frankenmuth (as opposed to the quick roadside stop).

There are so many places in the UP that I am sure you have not been. Many forest/logging roads, trails, ( 4 x 4 needed). Best of all , take a trip around Lake Superior. The circle tour. Its 1200 miles and you will never forget it . It can be done 2 ways, 4 x 4 or stay on the main roads (miss a lot of natural sites.) I have done it 2 times and never get tired of what I find around the largest fresh water Lake in the World !
