Currently reading "NYPD Confidential" by Leonard Levitt (one hell of a book!)

- Bill Bratton (1994-1996) (Giuliani)
- Howard Safir (1996 -2000) (Giuliani)
- Bernie Kerik (2000-2001) (Giuliani)

- Bill Bratton (2014 -2016) (De Blasio)
- James O'Neill (2016 - Present) (De Blasio)
Ray Kelly and Bill Bratton were the best.
The fact that they ran alongside each other
from years 92-96 and 2002-2016 proved masterful.
A true work of art.

I agree. I think both the citizens of NYC and the NYPD were very fortunate to have these two for so long. I seem to recall that Kelly and Bratton didn’t care much for each other, but I think they were both exceptional police professionals
I remember that Commissioner Brown used to be called “Out-of-town Brown” because he traveled so much. I think Giuliani chose his Commissioners based on their loyalty to him, after he got rid of Bill Bratton, who got as much or more press than he did. I don’t think Safir was particularly distinguished, and Kerik disgraced himself.
Bratton I. When he came back Bla kept him on a leash.
